SgrA* in the context of super-massive black holes, accretion processes, and star formation.

The meeting will be held as special splinter meeting of the the autumn meeting of the German Astronomical Society 14. - 18. September 2015 in Kiel. This year's general topic of the meeting is: From the first quasars to life-bearing planets: From accretion physics to astrobiology

Galactic Center

The year will be the first year after peri-apsis of the Dusty S-Cluster Object (DSO) G2. The meeting will highlight a number of observational and theoretical papers and results on that topic.

The passage of the DSO has spawned great activities in observing the Galactic Center covering the entire electromagnetic spectrum from radio, via infrared to X-ray wavelengths using telescopes across the world. Hence, a summary is due and stimulating discussions are expected.

While the conference mainly aims at a first attempt to summarize this year's observational results, However the events at the Galactic Center have to be put into perspective. and general aspects on the stellar populations, star formation and the accretion process as they are relevant for Sagittarius A* will be an important topic of the meeting as well. In addition, it is time to review the current state of theoretical efforts. as the accretion phenomenon and the physical nature of the event horizon will be targeted by upcoming experiments in the radio, infrared, and X-ray domain.

Accretion-Driven Black Hole Growth

In all likelihood, accretion is the dominant contributor to black hole mass growth and thus the observable brightness of their immediate environment. The growth time scale is then driven by a delicate balance between the viscosity of the material, which drives accretion, and the the action of the Eddington limit, which limits accretion but gives rise to mass loss from the central region.

In the splinter meeting we intend to discuss the physical processes and initial conditions which lead to the different evolution time scales of black holes and their currently observed masses. Of particular interest in this context is the question, why the Galactic Center stands close to the lower limit of observed galactic-center black hole masses. We will also address the question to which degree such effects may be tested by analyzing entire ensembles of black holes and their different evolutionary stages.

The Meeting is mainly organized by Institute for Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics of the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel, Germany, with support from the I.Physics Institute of the University of Cologne.

The Conference is also closely linked to the COST Action MP1104 - "Polarization as a tool to study the Solar System and beyond", the FP7 action "Probing Strong Gravity by Black Holes Across the Range of Masses", and the collaborative research center SFB956 "Conditions and Impact of Star Formation - Astrophysics, Instrumentation and Laboratory Research". With support by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) the splinter meeting will also constitute the CPK15 (Cologne-Prague-Kiel workshop in 2015).

Kiel is the capital city of the northernmost of the 16 German states, Schleswig-Holstein,with almost 250.000 inhabitants. It is a port city on the Baltic Sea, and the largest German cruise harbor. It is located about 90 km northeast of Hamburg, and about 60 km south of the German-Danish border. Christian-Albrechts-Universitaet zu Kiel (CAU or University of Kiel, for short) has been founded in 1665. Today it is a university offering a full suite of schools to about 25.000 students. The workshop will be held in one of the lecture rooms of the physics center of CAU.
