The figure (left) summarizes the spectroscopic results for three molecular ions together with the used reaction schemes and trap temperatures. For the recording of these spectra the wide tuning range of the free electron laser FELIX (FOM Rijnhuizen, NL) has been exploited, but also table-top lasers in our laboratories can be used for LIR (laser induced reactions). The temperature in each case is chosen as low as possible, the only restrictions being either freezeout of the neutral reactant (in the case of CH5+ + CO2) or the appearance of competing reaction channels at low temperature (C2H2 + + H2). Usually, the number of injected parent ions is on the order of 1000 and the trapping time per frequency step is up to 4 s. In the figure, the background ions have been subtracted and the signal product counts normalized to the laser power.
